Light jacket season is meant to be a euphoric time for all of us style obsessives. But, as you’ve said, many people don’t feel too attracted to the classic, if staid, options and I just think that means you’re a little more adventurous in your fashion tastes. This is the burden and the dichotomy that menswear hobbyists face: loving fashion so much that you develop such a particularity and a high level of taste, which ultimately limits what you actually like.
The good thing is we can always think outside of the light outerwear box. Harrington jackets, work jackets, shirt-jackets , denim jackets , and windbreakers are the main options and they serve us well. But those are just the basics, the tip of the iceberg, if you will. We have plenty more options if we just expand our thinking ever so slightly.
For whatever reason, tailored jackets don’t get seen in the same light as other outerwear. Let’s break that habit. Try for a sportcoat or blazer with an unlined construction and in a lighter material like cotton or a tropical-weight wool. If you’ve got a more casual suit with more of a matte finish, you can easily wear the jacket without the matching trousers. Break up the stuffy sartorial vibe and pair your tailored jacket with jeans and a vintage tee, cords and a denim shirt, cargos and a V-neck sweater, or, if you’re savvy enough, shorts and a polo.

The vintage militaria nerds out there will be quick to point out that there are vast variations of military jackets , each made for specific conditions. But don’t get too caught up in the minutiae. Field jackets, BDUs, and even parkas can be perfect as light outerwear, especially if they include removable linings. As for styling, think Liam Gallagher with big sunglasses and Clark's Wallabees or one of those swaggy Italian grandpas who seamlessly mixes tailoring with an M-51 field jacket.

Don’t conflate light outerwear for light jackets . Any layer becomes outerwear if the temperature is right and what is a cardigan but a knit jacket, anyway? Don’t forget what I said about expanding your thinking. Depending on how heavy the yarn is, some cardigans are serious enough to wear through winter. You can go grungy like Cobain with distressed jeans, worn-down kicks, and a vintage camp shirt; or take it neighborly like Mr. Rogers with pressed trousers and a button-up. If you’re a minimalist type, try a clean polo cardigan with some barrel-leg chinos and derbies. There are so many ways you can take it and make it your own.

Menswear moves at a glacial pace compared to the rushing river of women’s fashion, which is why we continue to see familiar silhouettes decade after decade. One way to get around that is to work within the categories and find freakier versions of classic silhouettes. You can also concentrate less on the jacket itself and hone in on the underpinnings around it. Work with a plain trucker or a run-of-the-mill windbreaker and experiment with everything else. Shoes, pants, accessories—let them roam wild and make the jacket the anchor.
