Natasha LaTour was barely recognizable, her head covered in a beanie and the hood of a large, heavy jacket in pandemic April 2021, as she stood in the darkness just a block and a half from her grandmother's home in Stockton, California. It was 3.30am, and Natasha, then 46, had parked her bike near the train tracks before she planned to spend hours at the local recycling center – where she supplemented her meager house-cleaning income with money from returning recyclables.
