News that fresh violence had exploded in Syria last week with a lightning offensive by rebel forces came as somewhat of a surprise to many. With several bitter conflicts raging around the globe - including Israel's wars in Gaza and Lebanon just across the border - few were focused on Syria where an uneasy ceasefire had held since 2020. But while Syria's civil war may have ground to a halt at the end of the last decade, it was never officially ended - and the nation's rebel groups have clearly been biding their time waiting for the moment to strike.
