About Our Ads Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski seems to have a few options for his next fight, and lightweight contender Renato Moicano supports his move up to challenge the champion in his division.
After stopping the previously undefeated Movsar Evloev in the main event of UFC 333, Volkanovski (29-4 MMA, 16-3 UFC) entertained moving back up to 155 pounds to challenge Justin Gaethje . With both champions nearing the end of their careers, Volkanovski said he wouldn't want to keep the division tied up and would vacate his title for a chance at the superfight against Gaethje.
Moicano (21-7-1 MMA, 13-7 UFC), who fought Islam Makhachev for the lightweight title on short notice at UFC 311, supports Volkanovski moving up, while also recognizing it could cause chaos in two divisions, as Arman Tsarukyan is the clear No. 1 contender and is waiting for a title shot at lightweight.
"I think (it would be bad for the division), but you know what? I would rather to watch Volk against Justin Gaethje," Moicano told MMA Junkie. "I think that fight makes sense.
"I think Arman needs to fight for the belt. He is the No. 1 contender, but I think he's a harder fight for Gaethje, you know? And Volkanovski, I think Gaethje would like to fight Volk better, and I think that is a history, you know? Volkanovski is a f*cking beast, you know? He tried the first time against Islam. He fell short, but he did a very great job on the first fight. On the second fight, short notice, and then he get back to the division. He lost to (Ilia) Topuria, but he still beat Diego Lopes and Evloev."
Volkanovski moved up to fight for the lightweight title twice while holding the featherweight belt. He lost both fights to Makhachev (29-1 MMA, 18-1 UFC) by unanimous decision and first-round stoppage, respectively.
Moicano, who returns to action in the main event of UFC Fight Night 292 against Tom Nolan, doesn't seem to care about the divisions being held up, even if Volkanovski and Gaethje do end up fighting with gold on the line. At the end of the day, Moicano thinks the fight would be worth it for the entertainment value.
"Give this man a title shot," Moicano said. "It's not good for the division, but it's good for the fans."
